BEAM is an ongoing sonic investigation of the hidden world of shipping, maritime culture and communications and the industries that have built up around the points where sea and land meet.
BEAM is an interactive multichannel sound installation which uses real time AIS (all ships over a certain size send out regular Automatic Identification Signals which transmit their unique call sign, latitude, longitude, speed, length, and other information to AIS receivers around the world) to control the playback of sound. multichannel sound playback is controlled through an tailor-made interface.
The first version of BEAM is a sonic investigation of the port of Kochi in South India and was made in 2014 working with art students from Srishti College of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore, India.
